Hilal Sami Hilal
Syrian origin, Hilal Sami Hilal began his career in the 1970s using drawing and watercolor before he delved into Japanese techniques of papermaking. From there, after a stay in Japan, his research intensified, resulting in a second trip to that country in the late 1980s. Crossing cultural influences between the East and the West, between the modern Western tradition and the ancient Islamic art,
their “lacework” appeared. The laces privilege the gestural strength of the artist, building the canvas from intersecting lines, colors that are revealed in the mixture of materials and the sensation of absence generated by the blank space. The work, placed at a short distance from the wall, benefits from the projected shadows, creating a virtual tracery. Some of his works are done only with acrylic resin, creating the same visual effect.
