DRIFTERS In this film, which DRIFT made together with filmmaker Sil van der Woerd, a floating concrete block appears for the first time in their work. The concrete block represents the basic element of our built environment. In Drifters this element searches for its origin and destination. The virtual event takes place against the backdrop of the spectacular nature of the Scottish Highlands. Nature and the man- made environment come together in images reminiscent of science fiction, and the end seems to be a direct reference to the ships from Star Wars, noiselessly floating through space-a longtime love of Ralph Nauta. In this final shot the block has been seamlessly integrated into a built structure. The work can therefore be seen from the perspective of whether the individual can escape from the collective. DRIFT also touches on this theme in the works inspired by the behavior of avian swarms.
